Server lag

Postby MysteryMan » Tue Dec 24, 2013 11:41 pm

We are aware of intermittent server lag and are working on the problem. Due to the nature of the problem, this may last another day or two.

You have no idea how much I'm looking forward to plucking things out of the old system and replacing it with the new.

The new system is faster, more stable, scales better, looks better, is easier to use, and - in reference to this - much easier to maintain.

The old system requires constant tuning so it doesn't break down over time. The new system does not.

The new system is actually relaxing to work with, because time put into it is progress instead of maintenance.

The admin staff is removing a bunch of old resource hogs that have a tendency to hammer the old system and are no longer needed today. We still have a bunch to go, but hopefully that'll help a little with the recent lag issues.

What about the occasional hangups that occur while watching replays?

Sometimes I could browse through my old replays to watch stuff for fun like GMB vs DEFS and such, then it will freeze on a turn in the transition to next turn. Seems to come every other battle replay for me.

As you may or may not know, one of the things that got us real excited about Alteil Horizons was the ability to make an entirely new hardware architecture. The old system had many single points of failure, so the new system is designed to keep on kicking should some of its hardware fail.

We moved the old system to virtual machines so that if the old hardware began to fail we could at least just move the system to a working machine. This failsafe is not ideal, but it prevents a complete system loss should the perfect storm happen.

This is exactly what ended up happening - the old system is having hardware failure. We ordered new systems and thanks to the vms, everything should return to normal once it goes online in a business day or two (we work weekends but the delivery doesn't). We have been applying software fixes to keep the old hardware on life support until it arrives, though software fixes can only do so much on dying hardware. Note that this may take longer should the unexpected happen.

The old system was designed for a small number of very stable machines and was not fault tolerant. The new system is designed to have a lot of small machines and not care if a single box goes offline.

An additional fan has been added to the old system to assist with cooling issues until the new hardware arrives
