Need: Good RPG Recommendations

Postby Ginnazoh » Wed Mar 10, 2010 5:33 am

Hello all

So I play a lot of RPGs and recently I just finished a couple of classic RPGs that leaves me itching for more good RPGs to play. But, I'm a bit out of idea so I'm looking for help. Feel free to recommend old or new ones.

Not interested in playing again for a while:
Final Fantasy 1
Final Fantasy 2
Final Fantasy 3
Final Fantasy 4
Final Fantasy 5
Final Fantasy 6
Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy 8
Final Fantasy 9
Final Fantasy Tactics
Tales of Phantasia
Tales of Destiny
Tales of Eternia
Revelations: Persona
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
Parasite Eve 1
Parasite Eve 2
Suikoden 1
Suikoden 2
Suikoden 3
Suikoden 4
Suikoden 5
Suikoden Tactics
Xenogears
Xenosaga 1
Xenosaga 2
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Secret of Mana
Legend of Mana
Seiken Densetsu 3
Star Ocean The Second Story
Grandia
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Legend of Zelda: First and Second Quest
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Will play when I get my ps2 back:
Tales of Abyss
Tales of Legendia
Tales of Destiny 2 (Go Chinese version since no one translated it to English!)
Final Fantasy 10
Final Fantasy 12
Shin Megami Tenshin: Persona 3 FES
Shin Megami Tenshin: Persona 4
Xenosaga 3
Dawn of Mana
Star Ocean Till the End of Time
Grandia 2
Grandia 3

Games I want to play but can't due to lack of english translation or new console:
Final Fantasy 13
Star Ocean The Last Hope
Tales of Vesparia
Tales of Symphonia
Tales of Graces
Tales of Rebirth

Yes most of the games I play, like to play and want to hear suggestions for are JRPGs. But I've also played other RPGs and wouldn't mind good suggestions. Here are some others I've finished.

Non JRPGs I've finished:
Elder Scrolls Daggerfall
Elder Scrolls Morrowind + Bloodmoon
Elder Scrolls Oblivion + Shivering Isles
Land of Lore Throne of Chaos
Land of Lore Guardian of Destiny
Land of Lore 3
Diablo 1
Diablo 2 + Lod
Gothic

Maybe you'll like Arx Fatalis.
Jagged Alliance 2 is some sort of combination between RPG and TBS.

Do you play only solo RPGs?

Alteil is pretty much well balanced. Sometimes you loose and sometimes the enemy wins.

How about the Breath of Fire series?
I only remember playing the 2 and 4, but they were good.
To be honest, i still have a bit mixed feelings about BoF4, because i couldnt find out what the target audience was. But its fun nevertheless.

I also liked Phantasy Star 4 (the older ones of the series are usually bugged or simply pain to play). Just be warned, that this game is old. : )

If anything else comes to my mind, i'll tell you.
Something must be wrong with me. I'm giving advices to someone i should kill.

If you want non-Final Fantasy RPG, then "The World Ends With You" is pretty good. Also don't forget Mass Effect!

Oh and if you're counting Legend of Zelda as an RPG then add Okami to the list :)

I second this.. and if I could, i'd third it and fourth it. I'm a big fan of RPG's, but this one definitely ranks as one of my favorites, and quite possibly my favorite story overall. However, not sure if you have a DS or not.

If you do have a DS by the way, get Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and Zelda: Spirit Tracks. Especially Spirit Tracks, that game is my favorite handheld Zelda and probably in my top 3 Zelda games.

And, yea, Final Fantasy X is great in my opinion. Might want to try X-2, but its definitely "Your Mileage May Vary".. in that I seem to be the only one who actually slightly enjoyed that game other than for the "all girl cast" fanservice. FFXII is pretty nifty too, though I wasn't able to stay into it long enough to finish it yet (leaving my PS2 behind when i went to college didn't help though)

Also, Disgaea is a pretty fun strategy RPG if that's your thing. You can get it on either the PS2 or the DS. Actually i think you can get it on PSP as well. I'll list more when I think of them.

Thanks guys for the great advice. I recently managed to get dolphin to run on my laptop with 28 to 35 fps during actual game play so I am playing Tales of Symphonia now.

But I'll probably be done with the game before finals start and i'll need more games to enjoy for summer.

Unfortunately, I only have my laptop, ps1 and ps2 so I can't play ds or psp or 360 games T_T
I can't even play some of the high end pc games with good fps since its a laptop T_T

Currently playing:
Tales of Phantasia
Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 & 2
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance

New games to look for:
Disgaea
Breath of Fire (I completely forgot about this series. I actually played BoF 3 and for some reason I just remember it as a lesser version of Dragon Quest games...I'll look into this series again)
Dragon Quest (Another series I forgot that I actually owned back home so I'll be replaying this for some fun times..granted the series lost me when they went to DS for 9, which seems like it will never be ported to actual consoles, and 10 being wii exclusive)
Phantasy Star (I actually never played this series before so I'm looking forward to it)
Okami (Yes! THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME! This game is so underrated that I completely forgot about it)

Games I forgot to mention that I have completed and do not plan on playing again for a while:
Final Fantasy X-2 (Yes..I 100% completed this game...was probably the most painful FF game for me to play tied with FF 12)
Arc the Lad 1 2 and 3
Arc the Lad Twilight of the Spirits (...just bad...stay away from this game)
Valkyrie Profile
Valkyrie Profile 2
Dark Cloud
Dark Cloud 2

Games I want to play but can't due to lack of console/weak pc:
Mass Effect 1 + 2
DS Zelda (Spirit Track and Phantom Hourglass)
The World Ends With You (I've heard great things about this game from my friends)

Threads of Fate is a pretty good PS1 RPG. Dual Hearts isn't really an "RPG," but it's still pretty fun.

If you end up liking Disgaea, then you'll probably thoroughly enjoy:

La Pucelle: Tactics (Actually this one's pretty easy)
Phantom Brave (Challenging, since unit's only last on the field for 5 turns)
Disgaea 2 (More of the same, few new things)
Makai Kingdom (Basically, they threw everything they possibly could and combined them together into this game xD)

Or probably a good chunk of NIS America's published titles: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NIS_America

For the PS2, I've heard good things about Mana Khemia and Ar Tonelico, but haven't played either.

You should also give Odin Sphere a try.
