it's not just japanese shows being imported
it's all kinds of shows from everywhere being licensed here and there

Ugly Betty is shown in like 30 countries or so

tv execs would rather go for what's tried and tested
than do something adventurous and untried
hence all this copyinng and licensing

personally though, i think we've reached our cultural peak
and from here on it's just stagnation

everything has been done already
music, films, art, fashion

everything is littered with remakes
