This style of thought coincides with things like Stockholm syndrome and other mass behavioral actions or reactions moving outside of what would be considered "logic". Most styles of "cult" followings would have similar connotations, as would arguably "addictions".

I think a more revealing study would be more based upon a chemical level measuring endorphins and such within live subjects, but... We tend to not poke around into live human brains too often...
