Day 1 of the kendo 8dan exams results (Tokyo): 963 people attempted it, 4 passed. 0.4% pass rate.

Day 2.888 participants, 4 passes. 0.5% pass rate.

So over 2 days of hachidan exams there were 1,851 people attempting, and only 8 passes. I heard that 1 other person passed the kendo portion yesterday, but was failed on kata. A 0.4% pass rate in total.

.5% pass rate? Dang. That's worse than the Chinese Civil Exams with a 1.3% pass rate.

If I'm not mistaken, 8 dan is the highest rank? Iirc correctly people have to practice for decades to have a good chance at passing this exam.

Anyway I know 9 and 10 dan technically exist but in these arts they're technically nonexistant if I'm not mistaken. Although I do remember seeing there was this one guy who was really revered in kendo that was a 9 dan.
