So...what are Gowen's non-attack grims supposed to do?

Everything that doesn't go anywhere else.

You stick a bunch of them in a file with Frontier Mage Swordsman and then you get a huge creature!

If we can buff Mercenary with the same ability that Sunday Afternoon Bringer has.

Oh, I actually know the answer to this one (most of it). The reason why Spider-man's costume is red/blue is because most super heroes created back then were super flashy in someway using mostly colors of Red and Blue (some exceptions like Green arrow/lantern, hulk, or Batman). Most villains were green, purple, and black. It was to make the Super Heroes break from the norm of everyday common wear.

The more you know...

I prefer my superheroes wear black though like Batman or Spawn.

The red white and blue theme certainly has played a part, but there is actually an even simpler reason for most of the older heroes having the same colour scheme. While most of the older superheroes were invented in black and white, the comics were soon upgraded to four colours.

That's right - four colours. For years these dots were done by hand. Over time, technology improved, colouring was done by machines and better colours could be created using that system (they still use it to this day). Of course, by the time the tech improved to create a broader and clearer set of colours, the superheroes colour schemes were set.

The colours they used were red blue yellow and black. The same colours used by laser printers.

Old people. They know stuff.

Can't forget Superman, his main costume is blue and red. Batman has many different incarnations and costume designs. Some of them do have more blue in them, so to some degree he counts as well.

Getting back to Spiderman, don't forget season 2 of Ultimate Spiderman begins in January!

While that may be more clear, it doesn't feel simpler at all.

In the early days, they could only create red yellow blue and black, with very few variations on those clours.
