What does it mean to be World Champion?

Find out this May, for the second US / Japan World Championship Alteil Competition!  Last year a number of factors made the Championship difficult.  Alteil, at the Championship level, is a game of inches – which is a fancy way of saying any disadvantage can snowball.  So while this year’s World Championship will take place on the US Alteil Server again, this year we’re going to do things a little differently...

The Sakura Collectors

Sakura is the Japanese word for Cherry Blossoms, which are emblematic of spring in Japan.  In fact, there is a tradition in Japan which is almost like a ceremony where you view falling Cherry Blossoms in the spring.  This is called Hanami.  See what you’ll learn if you stay in school, kids?  (or spend 5 minutes on wikpedia).  Surely there's a point to all this, and it's after the jump...

Alteil’s early Sets may not have the sugar-rush draw of some of our more recent ones, but they still contain a number of key cards that open up File-building opportunities and fill out your collection -- and more than a few jems like Aqua Sorceress Mystere and Blessed Knight Orfen.  Now, here’s a big chance to round up a collection of Alteil cards from the early Sets.

I was thinking, SA Bringer is way underpowered for a card I toted as the best ever.  First of all, not everyone wants to bring Gowen level up to 5 -- that’s an awfully big number -- so I made him level 3.  Also, what if the enemy has a unit with more than 40 HP?  It'd be a real bummer if there was something his open skill couldn't kill.  So, I figure we better crank that damage up to the max.  Yeah, that's about all the important changes I made to him.

I couldn't wait for maintenance, knowing that there might be one or two files out there that weren't including him.  He'll be updated instantly in duels, but the File editor won't update until after morning maintenance.

Well, sometimes an April Fool's joke can get away from you.  It was my plan to have an Underdog tournament day as an April Fool's joke, but it looks like BATORA played an April Fool's joke on me!  Well, just to prove I can take a joke, EVERYONE who entered Sunday's Tournament gets the 5 Point Cards AND the copy of King's Right Hand / Baldren.  Prizes for both days should be given out by morning.

And no, Sunday Afternoon Bringer was not part of the joke.  That was TOTALLY SERIOUS.

For our April free serial, we wanted to do something special – give away the perfect card.  The Japanese team put their heads together and brought out all the data of card use on all Ateil cards for the past two years, hoping to find some patterns to indicate the kinds of skills and abilities our users liked most.  Surely there must be something that stood out – Combos? Field control? Last minute comebacks?

Meanwhile, I took all forum posts for the past two years and drew up some graphs about most notable topics, what got the most views, and even what words were repeated most.  Then, undercover as my Alt, Low-grass, I inconspicuously chatted up users in-game to try and figure out what people would REALLY like to see as the next big card.

Then we all got together for an all-night Skype call to compile the data, and as we sifted through the numbers a pattern gradually began to emerge.  Could we have done it?  Could we have come up with the PERFECT ALTEIL CARD!?

I don’t like to pat myself on the back too hard, but we may really have come through this time.  Design-wise, there’s a lot to like here.  GaoGaiGirl put together the art as a finishing touch, and now we are able to present to you the best Alteil Card Ever in a free Serial:
